slurp 7020 Report post Posted June 21, 2009 Maybe someone here can help me. I want to take someone to a park somewhere for a bbq cookout. I'd like to bring my own bbq as I know how it cooks and want to make a really good ribeye steak for her. BTW, if you haven't had, try the ribeyes from Costco, they are wonderful! Since I don't live in Ottawa I don't know the rules in the parks. Is it OK to bring a gas bbq to a park and cook? Or are there restrictions at some? I tried going to the Ottawa parks website but they don't mention BYO bbqs. If I can't in Ottawa, do you guys know a place I can do this at not too far from Otown? This would be off topic but it's an SP I'm cooking for so ..... :p thx in advance!
cordsboy 184 Report post Posted June 21, 2009 Slurp, a good option is Mooney's Bay (MB), I would not recommend the main park in front of the beach but the smaller park to the left of the beach is quieter. The sun sets over the water so depending of the time of day it can be very nice. The one down side is the amount of traffic, lots of people at MB but from experience the left side is much quieter. The bonus of MB is that after dinner you can walk along the beach. Another great option is the park next to Dow's Lake (cannot recall the name), access is via Prince of Whales / NCC Scenic Drive, lot's of trees, on the water and not as busy (dog walkers tend to use this park as well). I've seen BBQ'a at both so I assume its all good but you never know the City may be hard up for some $$ and decide to ruin your day. Enjoy.
YoungStud 468 Report post Posted June 21, 2009 The park next to Dow's Lake on the north and west sides, accessible via Prince of Wales, is the Arboretum. A place with many types of trees (hence the name) maintained by the Central Experimental Farm of the Department of Agriculture. I'm pretty sure they would frown on BYO gas BBQs and they do have fairly regular NCC patrols to enforce off-leash dog by-laws. Just to the north of Mooney's Bay Park, you have Hog's Back Park and Vincent Massey Park. The latter has a particularly large BBQ area and also a large parking lot. A picnic table-top gas BBQ should not be a problem there.
slurp 7020 Report post Posted June 22, 2009 Thanks for all the info, V M seems to be the consensus so far. Lots of things to consider, I sincerely appreciate the input, keep it coming. What about Brittania Park? No one's mentioned that one yet .....seems like a nice place from what I've seen so far. Actually I'm talking about a free standing bbq, not a table top. It's a smaller BBQ and fits in my van ..... I got it for the very reason I can take it to the cottage. In any event, it would be safer and hopefully more acceptable from a safety standpoint. Thx again!
YoungStud 468 Report post Posted June 22, 2009 If you really want to be sure what's permitted where, probably worth a call to City of Ottawa info line 613-580-2400.
slurp 7020 Report post Posted June 27, 2009 I called the city and got the scoop. BBQs are allowed but ONLY propane or natural gas. I'm trying to figure how anyone would get the natural gas to the park but that's the rules. Just figured to let you all know since everyone has been so helpful. Don't try taking your charcoal grill ..... they must be deemed environmentally unfriendly.
d*mm*y 887 Report post Posted June 28, 2009 Lots of excellent spots in Gatineau park, when I was a youth I would pack a small tent and then head off into the woods with my lovely pop it up and shag her in the privacy of the tent! Seemed to get the fear of getting caught to dissipate with the ladies. Of course many of the ladies needed no tent! I remember one event we were on a rock face over looking the valley that we had climbed down to from Mackenzie king look out, and were hammering away over looking the river and Luskville Quyon etc... when out of now were a helicopter pops along the side of the cliff and the pilot got a good look at the activities! slurp 7020 Report post Posted June 29, 2009 OK, picnic done. No sex in the park, we did it before we went and are about to do it again .... and again ....... and again ....... and again!!!!!!!! Ended up at Andrew Hayden cause Brittania was packed as was most of the others. AH was charging $5 to park so there were parking spots available. But there were no tables so it was good I took some small tables along. It was all makeshift but fun, it was her first picnic in Canada. No geese in sight but the gulls were scavenging and she was sort of spooked by them so we didn't stay as long as we might have. All in all a very nice day..... Thx to all for the info!!!!
