v*****m*n 220 Report post Posted July 30, 2009 I just found out that a I will have to start donating my blood for a medical condition a close relative has. I have a 16 to 20 month window before I have to start. My Doctor says I am clean but should wait till then until donating. I have had lots of fun with both the SP's and MP's and I will still be calling on my favorite MP's. Thanks for the memories.

VedaSloan 119179 Report post Posted July 31, 2009 I think it's totally balls that you can't donate blood if you're a sex worker. If you test clean, shouldn't that be enough? Didn't mean to jack the thread, I think what you're doing is wonderful :)

Annessa 22743 Report post Posted July 31, 2009 am I the first to be slightly offended that seeing SPs could render your blood unclean? It was very nice meeting you VM but I have to say that SPs probably practice safe sex more than the general public, get tested far more often than any usual gal or guy. I do understand the honour in not participating in the hobby for fear of contracting something you could pass on to your relative through a blood transfusion, I am definitely not offended about your choice, but slighly unsettled that you have the view that any of the classy ladies you've seen on the boards here, like the ones who have posted or myself would ever put you or your relative's blood in jeopardy.
etasman2000 15994 Report post Posted July 31, 2009 am I the first to be slightly offended that seeing SPs could render your blood unclean? It isn't his attitude as much as that of Blood Services of Canada. From the following questionnaire: http://www.bloodservices.ca/CentreApps/Internet/UW_V502_MainEngine.nsf/resources/Can-I-Donate/$file/rod_2008-11-18_green.pdf Question 24: At any time in the last 12 months, have you paid money or drugs for sex? Question 25: At any time in the last 12 months, have you had sex with anyone who has taken money or drugs for sex? Question 29: In the past 6 months, have you had sex with someone whose sexual background you don’t know?

I understand where your coming from Annessa, it is a recomendation from my Doctor that I stop. I know it is a long shot that I might get something but I want to be able to give this person every opportunity to get a few more years of a good "quality of life" before they pass. This treatment will not cure them but it will atleast keep them around a little longer. I never said i was retiring, but stoping.

Grasshopper I was not questioning his morals on the situation or how blood transfusions save lives. ...just to be clear
Guest Ou**or**n Report post Posted July 31, 2009 I've always found that part of Canada Blood Service's screening to be disturbing. I mean I could be out cruising bars and having lots of very unsafe sex or I could be seeing SP's and having very safe sex, yet simply because I pay for it they screen me out. It would be far more logical to simply ask if you've had unprotected sex or if you've had more than x partners in the last y months. I have coworkers that give blood and they have me come with them. CBS knows that some people are in put in this type of awkward position so you have an anonymous means of still giving the blood but marking your donation to be discarded. Its made for a bit of a moral dilemma for me because I know my blood is safe, I am checked by my doctor regularly, practice safe sex (probably safer than most guys who aren't seeing SP's) and I know CBS tests my blood before using it. Anyone else been in this predicament?
rick_falcon 911 Report post Posted July 31, 2009 VM, I just want to say that it's very honorable what you are doing. Putting an action to where your heart is with your loved ones. As for Blood Services Canada, it's a bureaucracy. You can answer the full questionnaire but each sample is still tested. Then there is a question that asks: 'Do you want your blood donation to be used?' Why would anyone give blood but don't use my blood? And now, you need an apointment, etc... I used to be a blood donor and I don't anymore with the classic excuse: no time for it and too constraining on my schedule.
mod 135640 Report post Posted July 31, 2009 Thanks Etasman2000 for posting that link. You beat me to it. I understood the reason behind the post but failed to consider that many people are still not aware of the blood services rules. We all know that the online ladies are usually very safe as most insist on condoms. (Everyone here should know that by now) and most do not partake in injection drugs either. ... but ... society groups "sex workers" in one big pile and in that pile are the drug addicted ladies and much higher risk male escorts (M4M) It includes street prostitution as well (and I am not saying everyone working the streets is drug addicted or unsafe by any means... but we all know their is a lot more of that on the street than with the ladies who use computers and classified ads)... and most street pimps are not interested in computer advertising thankfully. Also condoms protect you from a lot of STI's but they are not 100% and they do not stop everything. You can get HPV, HEP, Herpes, etc... (unprotected oral sex) all these can affect a persons immune system so they must be cautiously avoided and to do this it's a stats game - just numbers. Let's face it... someone who has sex for money has a LOT more sex than someone who does not (putting them in a higher risk category in statistics) and according you your heath class in high school you are having sex with everyone your partner has ever had sex with (well that is how they figure it - I know... idiots). I hope they find a way to test donated blood affordable so that anyone can donate. I do not agree with it but I am sure every ounce of blood is not tested so how do they keep the risk as low as possible? I guess they feel this is the best solution. JoyfulC 132299 Report post Posted July 31, 2009 The thing is, medical science doesn't know everything. I'm old enough and have been around long enough to remember when HIV wasn't known, nor the mechanism behind AIDS. Back in those days, the worst incurable sexual disease you could get was HSV-II. (Which is really just a cold sore in the nether regions -- and only dangerous to babies if present in the birth canal -- and even that was recent info.) Medical science really has no option but to take this stance. There could be anything, any organism, stalking among us that isn't yet known. It could be transmitted by air, by food, or by sex. A responsible physician has no option but to caution against avoiding vectors of transmission. IV drugs and sex are very primary forms of transmission of disease. Hell, these days, some doctors are even recommending foregoing handshakes and advising that we cough into the crooks of our elbows. But under the circumstances, what else can they do? Life is about risk. Life is a contagious disease and death an inevitable consequence. But they're dealing with trying to prolong life. They have to take every precaution. v*****m*n 220 Report post Posted August 5, 2009 I waned to thank you all for the support. I was hoping this would not turn into a Canadian Blood Service issue, but I am kind of glad it did. I know that the SP’s on her are very safe and clean, (at least the ones I visited). I know that they are concerned for their safety as well as mine. The rules with CBS are the way they are, I think the questions are a bit outdated and I did voice my concerns. They should be more concerned about unprotected sex that paying for it. ( we don’t pay for sex, we pay for the time with the lady, so are we paying for sex or not?) sometimes sex happens right, so on the forms I can technically say no. If it means I stop for a few years, then that’s ok, I know that there are a few ladies I wish I had seen and I hope that I still can when I get back in the SP game. I don’t have to do this, I want to do this. CMJ get ready.
rockstar1 204 Report post Posted August 9, 2009 I think the CBS is just following the international protocol, and they are just protecting the patients from HPV, Herpes, and Hep retroviruses, that can affect their immune systems, unlike persons with normal immune systems. They are outdated, but the blood agencies were to blame for the spread of the AIDS virus in the 80's by not screening donors properly, that is why now you have questions silly as they maybe, but can prevent some minor infections that can be harder for someone with a weakened immune system. Most SPs are educated well, compared to the general public on sexual health, and are (in my opinion) safer compared to other sex workers who remain street walkers or drug addicted. Andee 220524 Report post Posted August 9, 2009 Makes me wonder if some of the bar sluts (male and female) where I go to Karaoke on Thursday nights have donated any blood lately. I have left condoms in the bathroom because I know from talking to some of my buddies that hang there, that most of their friends do not use protection when they sleep around. Creepy thought. Andee 220524 Report post Posted August 9, 2009 I think what you're doing is admirable, Valleyman. Since you want to help this person and you are at the mercy of the Blood Services' rules, then you must do what you must do. If that means no SPs for awhile, so be it. As Arnie once said, "I'll be back"...and I believe that's what you meant...once you fulfill this obligation. I was "white carded" years ago (by the then Red Cross) before I became an SP because I admitted to having acupuncture even though I tried to assure them the needles were disposal and I saw them being removed from an unopened package. Nonetheless they said they couldn't take my word for it, so I have not been able to donate blood since around 1991. It's a shame really, but I guess they have to draw the line somewhere even though I agree that the question should be about having unprotected sex, period!
