LonelyPerv 3756 Report post Posted October 23, 2013 There have been a lot of great suggestions here and most of them work for me. Especially about trying to find the time to spend with your special CERB lady. :-) I also find that thinking about other people, especially family, that have been in worse stressful situations. All of a sudden, my problem doesn't seem so big any more. I figured since they handled theirs successfully, it should be a piece of cake to handle mine. :-) As it was mentioned, knowing what the problem is and the worst case scenario that can come of it, makes it easier to handle when you prepare for the worst case by making it less of an impact. olderguy 5797 Report post Posted October 23, 2013 I'm convinced that stress is really a matter of perception as evidenced by the fact what stresses you, may or may not stress me in the same manner if at all. As I have journeyed through my life I have arrived at a point where I no longer stress about anything. Death of loved ones, serious health issues personally, career disasters, business struggles, problems with children and family members, failed relationships all proved to be both worrisome and stressful. However, no matter how much I worried or stressed about these dilemmas, I was unable to change their outcomes. As a result, I learned to stop stressing about these major events because it was a waste of my resources as a human. Stress will wear you down both physically and mentally more than any illness or injury will. What's the AA prayer? I think it goes something like... God grant me the serenity to accept the things I can't change, to change the things I can and the wisdom to recognize the difference... Please excuse the accuracy of my paraphrase as I think I might have it backwards, but the point is, I think it really applies when one is dealing with worry and stress.

Liv Waters 52361 Report post Posted November 21, 2013 I find two things really help me: * Bring it back to simplicity....of doing simple tasks, activities that give one a sense of mastery, or accomplishment...that's tangible....very much along the lines of what MightyPen had to say; and said it so well, I might add! * Give of yourself in an act of loving kindness to someone you care about...to a stranger. Go from there :-)
LeeRichards 177238 Report post Posted November 21, 2013 I probably replied to this already....oh well I used to go out ....get drunk and or laid. That of course leads to sleeping with someone, then moving in together and then divorce So after that I went back to getting drunk and or getting laid. That lead to marriage and having kids and separation negotiations in progress. Now I get a RMT massage every 3 weeks faithfully and drive to Brandon, Winnipeg or Regina or Saskatoon to de-stress with our awesome Cerb ladies and fly to Ottawa 3 or 4 times a year to de-stress once again with our awesome Cerb ladies and then get run over by crazy drivers and fly home. Not safe but simple ;)
someguy 67067 Report post Posted January 11, 2014 A new year has come. More stress at work and family. Financial problems from overspending. Tax season coming soon. How do you handle all this stress. Looking for some new suggestions.
Guest c**io**m7 Report post Posted January 11, 2014 That's the top of my list now in 2014...stress management. For the past year and a half, sex was my biggest stress relief. Major stress? Go to bank machine, withdraw money, call a girl...however, the underlying problems always still remained. It really was only a temporary fix but, it was all I used. Part way through 2013, I started dating an amazing woman...the best woman I have ever met and I fell in love, truly in love with feelings I had never felt before my whole life. Stresses kept piling on and she was a rock...always comforting me through them but, they were not going away and I wasn't facing them. In December, the stresses got to the highest they have ever been in my life...I dumped on my lady in a really bad way and she walked...I allowed so much stress to pile up over 18 months without truly dealing with, broke my own heart, and hurt someone who meant the world to me in the process, and then wound up in the hospital with a heart attack. Smoking didn't help but my doctor is convinced that I drove myself there with stress. So, now, am seeing a therapist who will help me with stress fighting techniques, cigarettes are now gone, am eating a little healthier and exercising. To help put stress in perspective, I have started writing again...short stories, poetry, snippets that metaphorically identify the stress and put it into perspective. I find this allows me to pinpoint it, clearing my head just enough to find a possible way to deal with whatever situation has caused that particular stress. It is key to only tackle one at a time...identify it, develop a viable solution, implement and move on to the next one. It ain't easy but, I am starting to realize that stress is best dealt with by hitting the problem head-on...face whatever fear or consequence results. If the problem can be fixed, fix it, stress gone. If the problem has no fix, no point letting it worry you, live with it and make it a learning experience...stress gone. clancy 142 Report post Posted January 12, 2014 I identify the source, if it is something brought on by something I did or said I own up to it and or apologize and make an honest effort to rectify the situation. Be kind, honest, respectful, fair, and generous to yourself as well as others. Say what you mean and mean what you say, give complements and refrain judgement. Give people the benefit of doubt, we are all human and make mistakes, so don't beat yourself up either. Assume nothing, if you want to know, ask. Pay attention to the people you know that always seem to have it together and talk to them if possible. I`ve learned to choose my battles, in other words remember what is important. Family and friends are all we have if nothing else. Money and nice things are good but not essential to live happily. Balance work, play and rest, that balance is different for everybody so find what works for you. Don't worry about keeping up with the Jones`s. Life is short, not a competition or race but if you can smile you`ve won. One of my favorite sayings is "Whether you think you can or can`t, you`re right" so never give up. In every problem lies a solution. Above all else be silly from time to time and have fun! After all...laughter is the best medicine, or a close second to time spent with one of the beautiful angels of CERB!! I love this place and the people I`ve met (on and offline)! I truly mean that!
emiafish 30979 Report post Posted January 12, 2014 I find a lot of stress comes from failing to live in the moment. When the past and future preoccupy us we can forget to breath. Some wise man said "Life is what happens when you make other plans". Fun fact: the brain does not discriminate between real and perceived stress situations; meaning your body reacts the same to real "threats" such as 900 pound gorilla chasing you around the room as it does to imagining there is a gorilla with bad intentions. So what does all the preceding mean? Fretting over what happened yesterday or worrying about what might happen tomorrow, real or otherwise seems like a horrible waste of energy. Staying and living in the moment allows one to devote all of their energy to the now. As I read that back to myself, it sounds like dime store philosophy. But for me, personally, living in the moment really helps with my stress levels, especially when I can't be with a Cerb goddess or two.

Nathalie L 112512 Report post Posted January 21, 2014 I'm pretty late to reply to this thread. I wish I had seen it when I started my master's degree - there's a lot of useful tools here I would have appreciated despite doing a lot of them already (orgasms, yoga, reorganizing, scheduling, planning, exercise, healthy eating). The first thing that seems to drop off when I'm stressed and/or anxious is exercise and healthy eating. I convince myself that I no longer have enough time to practice yoga, meditate, or bike because I have "too much work to do". I've realized as time goes by that that's simply not a good excuse. I prioritize my physical and emotional health over everything else (or at least, I try to). I have found meditation is an excellent habit to develop in order to counteract worry and stress. I agree! Meditation is about paying attention to your breath. Breathe in, and count, breathe out, and count. Sometimes I can only meditate for 20-30 seconds at a time. At other times, I can meditate for a few minutes. I try not to get frustrated with myself when my thoughts wander but just compassionately recognize that I'm a human being and it's going to take me a while to learn how to let go. Lots of orgasms. And yoga Damn right ;) Invest in yourself. Make yourself happy. It's infectious. Understand your responsibilities but make sure that your life has enough balance to keep room for you and your needs too. Learning balance is still a work in progress for me. Sometimes I can't shut things off. I'm totally a workaholic and type-a personality school wise. Surprisingly enough that hasn't transitioned into my cycling practices. When it comes to physical activity I'm totally a type b and very laid back =P (I think I'm a bit lazy!) Actually, the best way to handle worry is to let it be. Worry is what we (humans) do, and to try and not worry attaches a person to the outcome of having somehow to fix yourself. As soon as I do that I stop enjoying the moments I have, in the mistaken assumption that I need to be anything or anywhere else to be ok. Just as I am able to still love though I am in great pain, I am able to enjoy life even though I worry. Hold worry in your heart like you would a small child needing love, and it will be ok. Really beautifully said Danjo. When I have friends and family who fret about fretting, I tell them to just embrace it, sleep, engage in some self-care type of activities. Sometimes we just need to ride the wave of worry. I take a power nap if I can, or go for a walk by the river. Water works for me. Someone has already said masturbation and cheesies....... Sleep on it..baby..baby..let me sleep on it!I immediately get tired during a stressful time, or right after...need a nap! Give you my answer in the mo-or-orning! My mother used to always say "with sleep comes perspective". She's a smart cookie and I agree. Often when I go to bed worried I wake up and forget what I was worrying about.
