Best month to visit

Recommended Posts

Now I hope that doesn't get anyone too excited, I'm not planning a work trip out there any time soon! But I AM going to be out eventually, just trying to figure things out.

I have attempted twice to drive out to Newfoundland with friends only to have the plans foiled, so I've realized it would be much easier to just fly out there and rent a car to get around.

Whenever I do visit, I do of course want to meet a gentleman or two, but the biggest reason I want to visit is to get outside and see the beauty that exists in Newfoundland and Labrador.

So, I just got myself quite excited when I realized I have enough Air Miles to fly there at no cost, and I have been sitting here plugging in date after date for August, hoping for luck... but no flights. September won't work for me, and after that I'm sure it will be a bit too cool for me to get outside and enjoy the outdoors as much as I'd like.

My question then is: what month next year is the best to visit? I am not a party person, so the George Street festival and things like that have little interest for me. I want to go outside, hike, climb, sleep under the stars.

I can currently book ahead into June, but the website won't let me book anything later than that. Would June be a good month for outdoor activites? Or should I sit tight and wait to book for July or August?

I would bet on July or August. You're more likely to catch better weather (Although the weather is always unpredictable) and you'll be ahead of the student rush.

Most tourists show up in August or September.

The Avalon (eastern coast) always has lots to do, but if you're into hiking and kayaking and some white water rafting, central Newfoundland is a must. Lots of fun things to do and the weather is a little warmer.

Thanks for the tips!

I'm so mad at myself that I didn't think to check my Air Miles balance before this, I could have been heading out there right meow :( Unfortunately no matter what dates I try for in August it says no... so it'll have to be next year. I will sit tight for now and plan for early July next year I think :)

And thank you to the people who have been PM-ing me with work advice, but as I somewhat mention in my first post, I am looking for tips as a traveler, not really as an escort! I am a girl who loves to explore, and I've been dying to travel to every corner of Canada since I went to Australia and realized I saw more of their country than I'd seen of my own. So whenever I do make it, it will be travel first, sexy time second, lol. But don't worry, I will ensure to have a few days to entertain in St Johns before I hit the road to camp/bike/adventure :)

Any travel tips/advice are welcome! Best spots to hike, swim, etc! :D Ahhhhh I wish I could be going meow!

When I was there, I went whales watching. I was there in early July and apparently it's the perfect time of the year for that

It is something I really recommend! When you are 20 feet away from something so big and magnificent...yeah it's humbling and beautiful

As noted before, July-September are the best times to visit St. John's. If you're visiting the rest of the island, you're really ok going anytime from May to end of October. The St. John's area gets a lot of rain, dizzle and fog and can be quite cold anytime, but particularly outside the July-September window. That said, if you really want to experience Newfoundland, you don't need to go when the weather's perfect!

Ooohhhh, Air Miles would let me book for October. I am going away already in September though, I'll have to see if my dog-sitter would be willing to watch my pets two months in a row. This could be a possibility.

Is sleeping outside (tent/sleeping bag), feasible in October though?

October is hit or miss. I've slept in tent here in December. Sometimes it's warm during Halloween sometimes there's 1 foot of snow one the ground.

As said above, even if the weather is miserable, there's always a good time here. The people are warm and friendly and it's a safe atmosphere with folks who love to laugh, party, and play music.

I hope you manage to get here and I hope you have a great time :)

LOL, Cleo you're a brave one! The answer is that in early October the weather will be generally dry and the temp will be in the range from 10 to 15 degrees getting cooler in the nights. Fall in NL including the Avalon Peninsula is usually nice and moderate. With a good sleeping bag you should not have a problem and I've done it many times. I've taken the time to do "vacation at home" trips here and have pretty much seen everything there is to offer here. If you're strictly visiting for nature experiences the fall will be ok for a visit. However, (and I hate to say this because it might delay your visit) I think if you're looking for a more "full/complete" NL experience I'd look at July or August when most of the "touristy/cultural" stuff is open and in full swing. For example in October many tour boat operators that Malika mentioned will have stopped for the season. Will you be renting a car when you get here, because NL is huge in terms of driving distances to different top visit worthy locations.

Yes I would be renting a car, and driving the hell out of it all over the place!

I can't decide. I've been asking friends and am getting mixed responses, about half say go in October, the other half say wait til next summer. Ahhhhh I don't know what to do!

I have not been to Newfoundland, but as far as the east coast is concerned, the first part of August is usually the best time to visit. September and October is too late to camp. You will freeze your little pussy off, and we don't want that happening.

Just watch out for the screech. They will get you to drink it, and the locals won't actually drink it, but will get visiting folks drink it for the laugh.....

I've been sitting here forever now looking at tours and things to do in Gros Morne... and they all end September 1. SIGH! I wish I could come now, but good things come to those who wait, right? Looks like I'll have to wait til next year... I just don't think October would be right for the things I want to do. Le sigh!

I toured all of Newfoundland, from St Johns to Port Anthony and even over to Labrador and Red Bay. I would HIGHLY recommend the month of June. Don't drive at night (moose).

Cleo, I think for your purpose July/August might be better. However I will add that if you're looking at that time of the year you'll want to book plenty of time in advance like May as here on the Island rental cars are in extreme shortage in the Summer months. Also many of the better camping locations get booked up as well.

Just an FYI, if you fly into St. John's it's a 7 hour highway drive to Gros Morne. Maybe you'll want to convince a friend to join you on your excursion for company.

Oh don't worry, I have that all planned out :) I'd fly into Deer Lake, then fly home from St. John's :)

October can be very beautiful in Newfoundland. All year round around the irish loop can be very beautiful. Camping is more common in the May to August season. It's kind of all hit and miss with the weather. The common saying in NFLD for weather is wait 5 minutes and it will probably change. Camping in October you would have to check with tourism to see if they are open, but there are places like near where I live where you can camp that aren't part of a specific park. It depends on how bad you want to "rough" it. Renting a car would probably be easier in October than June-August since the summer is more of the official tourist season.

I've given up on October, decided that summer really IS the best time. I want to hike all over Gros Morne, and spend time in St Johns. So I WILL be out that way... but not until next year
