Guest S*rca****sid Report post Posted November 26, 2013 Yes, for sure Emily. There has been no decrease in sex work either...and many holes have been poked in the major reports that attempt to substantiate that with bullshit data. As the Canadian HIV/AIDS Legal Network Policy brief on the Swedish aka Nordic model has shown, http://www.aidslaw.ca/publications/publicationsdocEN.php?ref=1342 the work has just been more stigmatized and pushed further into the margins. When clients are placed under the specter of criminalization, so too are sex workers...negotiations are made hastily for fear of arrest. It has also led to a two tired health care system where workers are looked down upon and where anonymous HIV testing is denied to SPs (so unwise!). Because condom provision and other prevention programming is looked upon as somehow encouraging prostitution, these types of services have ceased for sex workers and their clients. It is also a crime for sex workers to run co-operative businesses. And, unless you own the property you work out of, it is a criminal offense to work in that given indoor space. Hardly a legislative model aiming to show care and concern for sex workers....and a lot of patronizing ideas about women being brandished in the process. We already have our own quasi-criminalized version of this framework in Canada. And, it's irritating that this Nordic model is touted as the next great hope in this country by people who clearly don't know what in the hell they are talking about. It's unfortunate that many upheld as experts on the issues don't even know the difference between a legalized or quasi-legalized model that treats SPs bodies as vices needing to be managed by the state, and a decriminalized model, which is what the sex workers' rights movement has been pushing for here , and internationally for decades. That is, a model where we shape best practices and meaningful health and safety standards as full-fledged labourers...professionals in our work, and where we have equal standing as citizens in this country. Huge difference!
