Ice4fun 78407 Report post Posted December 5, 2013 (edited) While not unexpected the passing of Nelson Mandela is still a significant loss for the world. This man not only transformed his country but also set an example for the world of how the determination and action if even a single man can change the world we live in. He showed us that leadership requires that the leader operate with integrity and principles. Thank you Mr. Mandela for the changes you brought to the world. MightyPen 67414 Report post Posted December 5, 2013 That's too bad. I'm not shocked since he was 95 and there was a close call just a month or two ago. But it's still sad to see his era come to an end. At least we can say... few people have lived a fuller life with more and better impact on so many people. He wasn't just a great and effective civil leader; he helped defuse the powderkeg surrounding the end of Apartheid. South Africa is still in deep social trouble, but it could have been incalculably worse without Mandela's efforts at a peaceful transition. A great man. canuckhooker 19203 Report post Posted December 5, 2013 Perhaps his greatest contribution was the belief that there can be no peace without forgiveness. His capacity to forgive and strive for the greater good of all of his countrymen was truly admirable.

bcguy42 38594 Report post Posted December 5, 2013 The world is a better place because Mr Mandela was in it. The world is a lesser place because he has left it. His personal struggle has ended. He is at rest. Our struggle to continue his legacy continues.

Ice4fun 78407 Report post Posted December 6, 2013 I saw the following poem that I think sums up Nelson Mandela... Invictus Out of the night that covers me, Black as the pit from pole to pole, I thank whatever gods may be For my unconquerable soul. In the fell clutch of circumstance I have not winced nor cried aloud. Under the bludgeonings of chance My head is bloody, but unbowed. Beyond this place of wrath and tears Looms but the Horror of the shade, And yet the menace of the years Finds and shall find me unafraid. It matters not how strait the gate, How charged with punishments the scroll, I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul. Athos 108589 Report post Posted December 6, 2013 There are some people that it is very difficult to imagine a world without them in it. Nelson Mandela was one of those types of figures. His name had been prominent in my consciousness for most of my life. It is extremely difficult to think of him as gone. The number of tributes pouring in from all over the world speak to how profoundly this one man changed our world. Porthos

cinelli 22184 Report post Posted December 6, 2013 I just want to repeat what canuckhooker said. He was a man who endured hardship far beyond what any of us can imagine. He had every right to be bitter and vindictive but chose forgiveness and peace. He remade South Africa, not as a land for the blacks, rather as a land for all people.
