Helping others can help yourself

Recommended Posts

I became a volunteer peer counselor at an addiction center in Ottawa because I have experiences to draw on and I genuinely care about the health of my city and my fellow man. What I didn't realize is how much this would help me.

As support, I even attend "anonymous" meetings with my new friend as he still feels so much shame.

I have realized something by spending time with him. I personally enjoy the activity that is quickly ruining his life. I don't have an addiction to it but, I did answer "yes" to more than seven of the twenty questions...and, if I really analyze this, I could technically see a problem brewing.

If Iook at how much money I have spent the last 10 years at this activity and think of things I enjoy more like travel, fine dining, home renovations...wow!! The things I could have done!!!

Thanks to my work with him, I am getting out before I run a risk of getting to where he is. Time to reassign my own thinking and my money.

The point? Reach out, help someone in need. You never know, you just may help yourself in the process.
