Don't let your phone rat you out

Recommended Posts

For those who don't know, your Android phone tracks your location history. Even if you're not using GPS, it still stores 'coarse' location from wifi and cell phone towers. You can view and edit this info at this link if you log into your google account.

https://maps.google.com/locationhistory/

For those of you with spouses, it might be tough to explain driving around town when you were 'home sick' or 'working from home'.

Not sure if iPhones have an equivalent thing but thought you all might like to know.

You can turn this off:

Google Settings >> Location >> Access Location - uncheck

Google Settings >> Location >> Maps & Latitude >> Location reporting - uncheck

Also be careful when sending hash-tags - you can be tracked that way too. There was a report on CBC a few days ago explaining how it works. Apparently it is really easy. I consider myself tech savvy, but I did not get it. It went right over my head. :(

Apple phones have the same tracking program. Very intrusive.

This appears to be a Google thing. If you are using the Gmail app or any other Google app (Maps, for instance) on you iPhone or iPad then Google also politely and unobtrusively tracks you, too.

If you are good at Techno-geek, it is all explained here:

Android: Location in Google Settings on Android

Apple: Location Reporting & History for iPhone & iPad

Creepy...

If you have a separate phone for your CERB-related activities, your best bet is probably to just turn your main phone off before you leave home/office, and turn it back on when you get back. After all, you'll have it turned off while you're there in any case...

If you only have the one phone then obviously this may be harder.
