Guest g*nch***2 Report post Posted April 22, 2014 All right so the name of this board is CERB. Personally, I pronounce it KERB because to me that just makes more sense. I've met an MA in Ottawa the other day and she pronounced it SERB. But then again she didn't seem to know how to use the word reckon in a sentence so... How do you pronounce it? KERB or CERB ? I am gonna keep saying KERB, just sounds better :)
Platypus123 396 Report post Posted April 22, 2014 I've always pronounced it SERB, like the pronunciation of cerebral. To me, KERB would be spelled curb. (English is my native tongue)
Clutch 711 Report post Posted April 22, 2014 I didn't know anyone pronounced it as "kerb." I can't think of a single English word that starts with "ce" where it is pronounced with a hard "k." Cerberus, cereal, cervix... Anyway, to each their own. I don't think anyone would think you are referring to a Kenyan reco board.
Guest g*nch***2 Report post Posted April 22, 2014 I see your point. English is not my first language so to me, being French, SERB is like the people of Serbia! Additional Comments: I write it with a C of course, but pronounce K.
Studio 110 by Sophia 150333 Report post Posted April 22, 2014 Once spotted in public with another lady we know and cherish here on CERB, a dude came to asking if we were from " kerb...or Serb..." I automatically got on the defensive as we did not want to be notice, I said " no I am from Moncton, why do you think I am Serbian?" hahahha Why would it be Kerb?? This is Canadian Escort Recommendation Board???? Not the Kanadian Escort Recommendation Board?? Just pointing out the obvious I guess??

frank97500 18478 Report post Posted April 22, 2014 Hold on, not done yet.... :) Is CERB an initialism or an acronym? Well, really Initialisms are formed using the first letters of a group of words where each letter is pronounced separately or sounded out. CERB falls into this category. Some other examples of initialisms are UFO and NDP. Acronyms are also formed using the first letters of words. However, they are pronounced as words. NATO and NAFTA are examples of acronyms. LOL.... At the end, like Meg O'Ryan was saying... as long as we keep coming back, it doesn't matter!!!!! Just saying!! ;)

Phaedrus 209521 Report post Posted April 22, 2014 I pronounce it with a soft C. I've never heard anyone else do otherwise. I didn't know anyone pronounced it as "kerb." I can't think of a single English word that starts with "ce" where it is pronounced with a hard "k." However, C is always hard in Tolkien's elven languages, so you could always claim to be a native Sindarin speaker, or something :)

"Tis the CERB." "But ye have been on that too long; the forces of Darkness approach!" "Apologies; it is a bad hobbit..."

Well, really Initialisms are formed using the first letters of a group of words where each letter is pronounced separately or sounded out. CERB falls into this category. Some other examples of initialisms are UFO and NDP. I beg to differ. CERB is an acronym. We say "serb", not "C.E.R.B.". My apologies for my inner nerd.
