Guest S****r Report post Posted November 3, 2014 (edited) Just sent the following to Senator Jaffer after reading her comments at the hearing last week. She said "...the challenge is that in our heads we can't see the difference between forced prostitution, trafficking and women who choose." I urge others to write her also and help her see the difference. Thank you. Honourable Mobina Jaffer: I read your comments in the transcript of the Senate committee meeting last week on Bill C-36 with interest. As a professional educator who has chosen to escort on the side to supplement my income in order to provide for my three children, I particularly noticed your remark that it is a challenge for you to see a difference between forced prostitution, trafficking and women who choose prostitution. In an effort to help you understand, I invite you to read a couple of articles from my blog on my website. The first is titled: Legitimate-Sex-Work-in-Canada-What-I-Am-Dying-to-Say-to-the-Press/ at http://www.sensuoussummer.com/#!Legitimate-Sex-Work-in-Canada-What-I-Am-Dying-to-Say-to-the-Press/cisu/47EF349C-0265-45FC-9D68-4E7D18E1E879 The second is: A Day in the Life of an Escort at http://www.sensuoussummer.com/#!A-Day-in-the-Life-of-an-Escort/cisu/F067ADEF-4616-4D0C-B5A1-695F93D1F25D There is also a third article I have entitled Its not Oppression, It's a Profession. I think it is your duty to gain understanding of those of us whose lives you are affecting before you vote on the issue, because yes, this bill will hurt me and my colleagues, not protect us. Regent 35404 Report post Posted November 3, 2014 I read one of Senator Jaffer's transcripts the other day, and it sounds like while it took her a while, she really does get it. http://mobinajaffer.ca/senate-chamber/senate-speeches/october-21-2014-second-reading-bill-c-36/ Is there a different transcript that you're referring to? Also, still not too late for sex workers, clients and allies to submit a brief.
Guest S****r Report post Posted November 3, 2014 Wow. She came across differently in the transcript of Oct 29. I was responding specifically to her comment: Senator Jaffer: Professor, the challenge is that in our heads, we can't see the difference between forced prostitution, trafficking, and women who choose. This is because we have certain biases and we have all been raised in certain ways Well, then my letter will only further reinforce her understanding from others. I guess. Thanks for letting me know. fortunateone 156618 Report post Posted November 3, 2014 i really appreciated her willingness to open her mind. Yes, it is as simple as saying, 'while i don't want to do this myself, it isn't right for me to impose my unwillingness in the form of penalizing laws'. She made an effort to go out and talk to sex workers, and she came up with this, from what i can tell, from talking to street workers mostly. If she can come to a change of mind based on that group, it is very impressive. most would come out of that and decide, well, they obviously don't know what is good for them, and c36 will rescue them (i.e. force them out of biz).
oldblueeyez 15475 Report post Posted November 3, 2014 For reasons I won't go into, I see both sides of the coin here. I've read about the infamy of a Nova Scotia organization and how it recruits even in local high schools, which scares the fuck out of me. I say if the provider is 25 or over and operating of her own free will, just license it and tax it. On the other hand, people like those mentioned above piss me off, and if I ever have to save someone I love from them,
squirtingmilf 1982 Report post Posted November 4, 2014 I really respect what she had to say for the most part and she did go to PACE to meet with Sexworkers and supporters. I was on twitter last night and a bunch of advocates were really going off about Gosse and rightfully so, if she's not an expert on consensual sexwork and admits to not being one or having any data, she shouldn't have been in there in the first place. And as Jaffer pointed out to her there are already two bills for human trafficking coming up that they're going to go over, plus a third that they're going to be putting forth. That's where Gosse should focus her efforts on rather than making claims on a subject she has admitted to knowing nothing about. There's another meeting today at 2pm. The other thing I respect about Jaffer, is that she actually listened to what everyone on our side had to say, especially in terms of the RadFems and Abolishment agencies, so now she knows their agenda, although I think I might write to her about that to reinforce it and use content that I posted here on the subject for her.
