Building a site is pretty easy with wix.com or other similar sites. They have loads of templates that you can tweak to your content. And if you were so inclined, you could get a domain name through GoDaddy and link it to your wix site.

Wix is okay, but wordpress is 100 times better. I've been designing web sites since 1996 :) I don't believe in outrageous prices either, like some people do, no need for it with wordpress.

When using any of those build it yourself type products like Wix please look over their terms and conditions for what they prohibit. In my opinion the more that you can control in terms of your online marketing (like hosting your own site through your own account) the better.

VERY true, hosting is cheap too, you can get pkgs from $49 a year.

I used escort-design.com it's free to try and you can pay yearly to remove the ads if you wish, you can also buy whatever domain you want and have them program your new domain name to work with your new website whenever you want. All in one day, i found it very easy. For anonymity I registered the domain with a vanilla visa card and made up a name.

I'll weigh in on this one, since this is right in my wheelhouse.

You have received very different advice and both options (hosted, self-hosted) have pros and cons. The determining factor will be your level of knowledge in the area.

Regardless, you should treat whichever path you choose professionally. You should never blindly trust someone because they 'know something about websites'. You are placing a lot of information and power in the hands of your web guy if you provide them with the main login to your accounts. I see people and businesses blindly passing around their account credentials to developers and have lost access to and control of their sites, either because the developer hijacked their site or disapeared along with the keys to your web kingdom.

If you are just starting up and don't have a connection with a trusted web developer (and no, it should not be a client) you should probably follow Kate Von Katz's advice an go with something like Wix. You will have complete control, you will not give up access to someone who could invade the privacy of you and your clients and Wix is responsible for basic site security.

If you had a technical background, wordpress would be a great option, but wordpress sites draw particular attention from malicious bots. This isn't a problem if you know how to secure and protect a site, including immediately updating wordpress and plugins when updates are released, but if you don't, do yourself and your clients a favour and don't pretend to be a web developer. I see plenty of professionally trained and experienced web developers who are woefully inadequate, let alone people who have no training and experience. The web development field is no longer a DIY place, unless you're highly trained or using a fully hosted solution; and stay within the confines of their interface.
